The Biggest Trap When Trying to Live More FreelyThe Biggest Trap When Trying to Live More Freely

Tim Ferriss inspired millions of people. Me too. But his advice almost sent me in the wrong direction.
“The 4-Hour Workweek” is about delegating work, automating processes, and then sitting on a beach in Bali. That sounds great. The problem: Ferriss was already an entrepreneur when he wrote it.
I’m a civil servant working shifts. A father. I’m not delegating anything to virtual assistants.
The biggest trap when trying to live more freely isn’t money. It’s the wrong blueprint.
Trap 1: Your Image of Freedom Doesn’t Match Your Reality
Ferriss’ freedom means: work from anywhere, work whenever you want. That’s a specific freedom model — and it’s not the only one.
It took me two years to understand what my version of freedom looks like. Not Bali. Not a 4-hour workweek. But: enough financial buffer to turn down a bad job. Enough weekend time to actually be present. Enough energy after a shift to still build something for myself.
If you start with the wrong target image, you run in the wrong direction — even if you run with discipline.
Before you ask how to become freer: ask first what freedom concretely means to you.
Trap 2: Freedom as an End State, Not a Process
“Once I’ve achieved [X], I’ll be free.”
Once I’ve changed jobs. Once I have €100,000 in the bank. Once the kids are grown.
That sounds like a plan. It’s a postponement.
Freedom isn’t an end state you reach. It’s a quality you can build into your life — now, with what you have.
I started by reclaiming small things: one hour per day that belongs to me. One evening per week with no obligations. One financial decision per month that makes me more resilient.
None of these measures turned my life upside down. But after two years, the sum is surprisingly powerful.
Trap 3: Bad Routines, Not Lack of Money
This is the underrated trap — and I fell into it myself.
I thought for a long time: if I had more money, I’d have more freedom. More money would buy more options.
That’s true. But I had routines that wouldn’t have disappeared even with more money. Constant availability. Difficulty saying no. No clear boundary between “work” and “me time.”
More money doesn’t buy better boundaries. Better boundaries you have to set yourself.
I started concretely: no phone in the first hour after waking. No work emails after 8 PM. Three fixed evenings per week reserved only for family and my project.
That sounds simple. But simple isn’t the same as easy. These routines required real resistance — my own — to stick.
My Honest Progress Report
I’m not free in the Ferriss sense. I’m also not unhappy.
I’m a shift-working father who is gradually building a second income stream. Step by step. With real systems, not wishful thinking.
What I’ve learned:
Freedom isn’t a product you can buy. It’s a state you actively shape. It starts with being honest — with yourself, about what you really want. Not what looks good on Instagram.
Ferriss was right: delegate, automate, simplify. But his context was different from mine. That doesn’t make his model wrong. It makes it incomplete for me.
I’m building my own version.
The Next Step
If you want to start making your life more resilient — not perfect, but more resilient — start here: Start Here.
Not with a grand plan. With one small, concrete step. Today.
