AI agents for the self-employed in 2026 — abstract artificial intelligence visual

In May 2026, Sam Altman said it plainly: the first AI employees are coming this year. Not as robots. As software that works on its own.

That sounds like the future. It’s already the present.

What an AI agent is — and what it isn’t

An AI chatbot answers questions. An AI agent gets things done.

The difference: you tell the agent what you want. It plans the steps and runs them — across different apps, without you making every click.

A concrete example: you say “Find the five cheapest suppliers for [product], compare them, and give me a table.” The agent searches, opens pages, reads, compares, and delivers the result. You wait.

This isn’t a demo. OpenAI’s Operator can do it today.

What this means for the self-employed

I’m not a big company. I don’t have a team. That’s exactly why AI agents interest me more than almost anything else right now.

An agent takes on the tasks I have no team for:

  • Research for new articles or offers
  • Summarizing long documents or emails
  • Filling out forms, gathering data, building tables
  • Recurring workflows (invoices, follow-ups, reports)

Not everything runs smoothly yet. But the pace is impressive.

The three tools I’m watching right now

ChatGPT with Operator mode — Can control a browser, fill out forms, read pages. Already useful for many everyday tasks. Available from ChatGPT Plus.

Claude (Anthropic) — Stronger with long texts and complex analysis. I use it daily for articles and offers.

Make.com — Not a classic AI agent, but a powerful automation tool. It connects apps, reacts to triggers, runs sequences. For the self-employed, often the more practical starting point.

What I’d recommend

Start with a concrete problem. Not with the coolest tool.

What’s costing you the most time right now? Research? Email? Data entry? Take exactly that and test whether an agent can handle it. One hour of setup can save you five hours a week.

That’s not a promise. That’s my experience.
